A primary component of the Bilingual Nursing Scholars Initiative is the Summer Enrichment Program (SEP). SEP is in a three-week intensive summer workshop to enhance students’ language, computer and math skills. They spent a total of 60 instructional hours polishing their skills to increase their likelihood to qualify for nursing school admission. Over 130 students have participated in SEP in the last four years.
June 30 marked the graduation ceremony for the thirty-one Springdale, Har-Ber and Siloam Springs students who attended the Summer Enrichment Program. The students successfully increased their test scores from the pretest to the posttest by an average of 30 points. For their efforts students received a $350 stipend for their attendance. Each student also had the opportunity to enhance his/her skills online. Using these tutorials students can earn incentive money for skills mastery. The average incentive earned by 2009 SEP students was $150.
